Private Practice on the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man offers a unique opportunity for medical professionals. With a population of approximately 85,000, the island has a strong demand for private specialist services — yet many patients currently travel to the UK for care that could be provided locally.

IOMD exists to support you in delivering that care here, on-island.

Why Private Practice on the Isle of Man

Running a private practice on the Isle of Man comes with distinct advantages:

  • Reduced waiting lists — treat patients when they need you, not months later
  • Clinical autonomy — practice according to your professional judgment
  • Direct patient relationships — continuity of care without the NHS bureaucracy
  • Island lifestyle — live and work in one of the most attractive locations in the British Isles
  • Growing unmet demand — many specialties are under-represented, creating opportunities for new consultants

What IOMD Offers You

Professional Community

You are not an isolated practitioner — you are part of a recognised body of private specialists. Our networking meetings, peer discussions, and collaborative events connect you with colleagues across specialties.

Patient Access

Being part of IOMD means visibility. Our website directs patients to member practices. We help grow your patient list without you having to invest in separate marketing.

Professional Standards

IOMD sets and maintains membership standards. Being an IOMD member signals to patients, referrers, and insurers that you meet recognised professional and governance expectations.

Collective Voice

When matters affecting private practice arise — regulatory changes, insurance negotiations, service developments — IOMD represents the collective interests of our members.

Peer Support

From clinical questions to practice management, our network offers a support system that isolated practitioners alone cannot access.

The IOMD Referral Network

One of our core functions is facilitating referrals between member practitioners. When a patient’s needs fall outside your specialty, you can refer with confidence to a colleague you know and trust — and patients benefit from seamless on-island care.

This internal referral network is one of the strongest benefits of IOMD membership.

Who Can Join

Membership is open to qualified medical professionals who:

  • Hold appropriate professional registration (GMC, NMC, GPhC, or equivalent)
  • Maintain current professional indemnity insurance
  • Provide, or intend to provide, private medical services on the Isle of Man
