Isle of Man Doctors Group is a professional membership organisation and the collective voice for private medical practitioners on the Isle of Man. We bring together independent consultants across all specialties to improve collaboration, uphold professional standards, and ensure patients on the island have access to high-quality private healthcare without needing to travel to the UK.

Our Story

IOMD was founded in March 2021 by Ashleigh and Cameron Caldwell in response to a significant gap in the island’s private medical sector. Prior to our formation, there was no dedicated professional community for private practitioners operating outside the traditional hospital structure.

A 2019 Isle of Man medical survey revealed that 50% of islanders held private medical insurance — typically provided through employers — and up to 80% either had insurance or would be willing to pay privately for healthcare. Despite this strong demand, many patients were unaware of the range of private medical services available on the island. IOMD was created to bridge this gap — connecting practitioners with the patients who need them.

Our public website launched in September 2022, making it easier for patients to discover and access private consultant care close to home.

Barrule Medical Group has been a founding member from the beginning, providing ongoing organisational and administrative support.

What is Isle of Man Doctors Group?

We are a professional membership body that represents private medical consultants practising on the Isle of Man. We help patients discover and access private specialist care without needing to travel off-island. We do not provide clinical services ourselves — all patient care is delivered by our member practitioners in their own independent practices.

Do I need a GP referral to see one of your doctors?

Many of our member doctors can see patients without a GP referral. Contact the individual practice directly to ask whether a referral is needed for your condition. Some insurance policies may require a referral for coverage — check with your insurer.

How do I book an appointment?

Visit our Our Doctors page to find a specialist. Each doctor page includes their contact details, practice location, and direct booking information. You can also find links to their individual practice websites.

How much does a private consultation cost?

Costs vary by doctor and the type of consultation or procedure required. Please contact the individual practice directly for their current fees. Some patients use private medical insurance to cover all or part of the cost — see below.

Do you accept private medical insurance?

Most of our member doctors accept the major UK health insurance providers, including BUPA, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, Aetna, Cigna, WPA, and Healix. Self-pay patients are also welcome. Contact the individual practice to confirm they accept your specific insurance policy, as coverage can vary.

What happens if I have a complaint about a member doctor?

IOMD takes complaints seriously. If you have a concern about the care you received from one of our member practitioners, please first raise it directly with the practice — most issues can be resolved this way. If you are unable to resolve it with the practice, you can contact us and we will facilitate the complaints process.

Are your doctors qualified and regulated?

Yes. All IOMD member doctors hold appropriate professional registration (such as GMC registration for doctors) and maintain current professional indemnity insurance. They are bound by our membership standards and code of conduct.

Where are your member doctors located?

Our member practices are located across the Isle of Man, primarily in Douglas, with some in Onchan and Ballasalla. Each doctor’s page includes their clinic address and directions.

Can I get evening or weekend appointments?

Availability varies by practice. Some of our member doctors offer evening or weekend appointments. Contact the individual practice to discuss what times are available.

What specialties do your members cover?

Our members cover a range of specialties including ENT surgery, dermatology, pain management, colorectal surgery, and radiology. We are actively growing our network — new members joining soon cover general practice, cardiology, and endocrinology.

How do I join IOMD?

Membership is open to qualified medical professionals who hold appropriate professional registration (such as GMC, NMC, GPhC) and current professional indemnity insurance, and who provide, or intend to provide, private medical services on the Isle of Man. What happens at networking meetings?

We hold regular networking meetings in Douglas for our members. These gatherings provide opportunities for peer discussion, case review, and professional development. Guest practitioners are welcome by arrangement.

Can medical students shadow IOMD members?

Yes. During academic terms, we promote structured observational placements in private practice for medical students and aspiring clinicians. All shadowing is conducted to professional standards with explicit patient consent.
